The title 'Our bushland beauties' is a nod to the local 'Our Bushland' initiative helping to raise the profile of our local forests and how important they are in terms of supporting a wide range of woodland bird species, including the critically endangered regent honeyeater. It's estimated that there are less than 300 individuals left in the wild, and we have been lucky enough to have them visiting our local forests for the last couple of months (they migrate up and down the east coast in search of the best blossoms to feed on). It was a very special experience to not only see these birds in the wild, but to also bring my family back to that spot so they could see the regents for themselves - up to ten birds at times flitting between trees, feeding on spotted gum blossoms!
 
I wanted this artwork to capture a lot of things - the sheer beauty of these birds, their busy, flitting nature (never seen sitting still for long!), and the way these honeyeaters blend in so well with the foliage - it was difficult at times to pinpoint where they were in the mess of leaves and flowers! I also wanted to capture the transient nature of the spotted gum blossoms that they love feeding on, in turn signifying the transience of the regent honeyeater in our region.
